Sailor Moon

Is the title of a Japanese media franchise created by Naoko Takeuchi. It is generally credited with popularizing the concept of a sentai (team) of magical girls, as well as the general (re-)emergence of the magical girl genre itself.

The story of the various metaseries revolves around the reincarnated defenders of a kingdom that once spanned the solar system, and the evil forces that they battle. The major characters—called Sailor Senshi (literally "Sailor Soldiers"; frequently called "Sailor Scouts" in the North American version)—are teenage girls who can transform into heroines named for the moon and planets (Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, etc). The use of "Sailor" comes from a style of girls' school uniform popular in Japan, the sērā fuku (sailor outfit), after which the Senshi's uniforms are modeled. Fantastical elements in the series are heavily symbolic and often based on mythology.

Saint Seiya

Also known as Knights of the Zodiac, is a manga series authored by Masami Kurumada, and later adapted to anime. The story follows five mystical warriors called the "Saints" (or "Knights"; the kanji is properly read as sei-tōshi "holy fighter" but the furigana has it pronounced "saint") who have adopted various constellations as their guardian symbols. The anime series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize in 1987, but was cancelled in 1989 due to low ratings of the manga and anime In 2002 Toei produced Saint Seiya: Hades, which continues adapting the manga story arcs that remained pending to be adapted to animation when the anime was cancelled in 1989.

Power Rangers

Mighty Morphin

The show and its related merchandise both saw unbridled overnight success, catapulting into pop culture in mere months. Under the original name Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the series ran from 1993 to 1996 and spawned a feature film, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.

The second and third seasons drew on footage and elements from the Japanese series Gosei Sentai Dairanger and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger respectively, though the Zyuranger costumes were still used extensively; the main 5 Dairanger suits were never used at all, only the KibaRanger (White Power Ranger) suit was used. The series was produced by MMPR Productions and distributed by Saban Entertainment, and aired on Fox Kids.

In 1996, the Mighty Morphin label was retired as the series would follow in the footsteps of its Sentai source material, changing its name, cast and plot every year; thus the Power Rangers franchise was born. Power Rangers still runs in this format to this day, though currently the majority of post-MMPR series are not spin-offs in the traditional sense.
